I've noticed a few people seem to be having trouble getting past the first boss. Heres how you do it.

Find all the health and energy upgrades you can on the first two levels. The blue special weapon is available on one of these levels and it will help you out a lot. (Hint: try following the ladders down below on the first level, and you might find it!) Once you have the special weapon, press up and attack to use it.

Mr. Thomas has a pretty basic pattern he follows during the fight, you just need to recognize and follow this pattern and you can easily beat him.

- first he throws his blade forward and you can duck under
- second he throws his blade in an arc. let it pass over your head and then jump over it on your return
- he will charge at you after this so run to the side and climb the ladder. When he is below you jump over him and land some hits.

- repeat the pattern until he is dead. use grenades and the blue special for an even quicker death.
